Technology For Students 2012

With all of the new and exciting technology currently available it only makes sense that there would be a few awesome programs that are great for students. While not all of these programs are made for or even intended for students, they are great for any sort of student (software engineer –aspiring nurse). Here are the top new free programs for students for 2012.

DropBox – Whether you’ve heard of DropBox or not; you should start using it. The best way to use DropBox is to find someone who already has one and have them invite you because responding to invites earns both you and the invitee more free space. DropBox is a great tool that not only syncs the files from your computer to your DropBox (free computer backup) but also allows you to sync to your DropBox and access your DropBox from any computer. That means you can finish a document on your home computer, go to the library, access your DropBox and then print it without ever having to transfer files! How convenient is that! The one and only disadvantage is that you only get up to 16GB of free space (with a lot of shares) however; you can pay for extra space should you need it.

EverNote – EverNote is another great tool for students. It is also quite possibly the greatest free organization tool ever made! You can access it from your computer, smart phone or tablet and you can use it to organize and search everything from photos, lists, recipes, homework or pretty much anything else you can think of. The normal version of EverNote is free, however; should you wish to upgrade to premium, you can get together with your classmates or buddies and get a 50% off discount (in groups of 3 or more for students).

Google Everything – Whether it’s Google Docs, Google + or Picassa, Google has a lot of really useful tools for students. With Google Docs you can create, write in, save and share documents online. You can also download them in a wide variety of formats (I.E. you can create a Microsoft word document even if you don’t have Word). You can also access Google Docs from anywhere you can log into a computer. Google + is a new (and fun) social site with features that are just a bit reminiscent of Facebook. However; with Google + you can set up circles to include your classmates, a separate circle for your teachers and you can post video hangouts and have a full, online study session with your mates. Not only are Google tools convenient and easy to use, but they are all 100% free which is great for any student budget.

Doodle – Doodle is also good technology for students to have. Doodle is easy to use, free, and can be used without registration. You can use it to easily set up meetings, appointments, events, polls and much more.

Skype – Despite the fact that everyone has heard of Skype at one point in time, not everyone uses it. Skype is a great tool for chat, free online web call, free online call and very cheap web to phone calls. You can also use Skype to do video conferences, meet with your teachers and have a group chat with your fellow students.

College Scholarship Competitions

There is nothing better than being given money to attend college except for perhaps earning the money in a scholarship competition. A scholarship competition is a contest that asks participants to do a certain thing in order to win money. This could involve writing an essay, knitting, skateboarding, creating a costume out of duct tape or a variety of other things. If you have skills than you should definitely check out scholarship competitions.

There are a lot of scholarship competitions available so make sure that you look for one that suits your skills and your degree. For example, if you are planning to study to be a nurse practitioner then you could consider applying and competing for a Nightingale Nursing Scholarship which offers up to $24,000 to the right student. This is an essay competition so make sure you are ready to do some writing.

Stuck At the Prom

The Stuck at the Prom Duck Tape Brand Duct Tape Scholarship Contest is for teams of high school students who plan to attend the prom. To enter you must create your very own Prom costume out of duct tape. Winners receive $10,000 to attend the college of their choice with second, third and fourth place winners winning cash amounts as well. Entries are judged on craftsmanship, color and usability. Deadline for entry is June 13 of the year you wish to enter the contest. You must also have the legal permission of your parent or guardian as well as the stated intention to attend a college.

Greeting Card Competition

Do you like to draw, paint or design? If so, now is your chance to win a $10,000 scholarship for creating a greeting card. The Create-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship from Gallery Collection accepts up to 1 entry per person and the deadline is January 16 of 2013. Entries should be high quality images of the finished artwork. By submitting a card you relinquish all copyright to the work even should you not win the contest. Applicants under 18 should have parental permission.

Make It with Wool

The American Sheep Association hosts a National Make It with Wool Scholarship Competition that awards $1,500 in scholarship money to winners in three age groups. To apply you must be able to create something out of wool. As a warning, many of the competitors are quite good so you should actually know how to knit or weave as the competition is heavy. You will be expected to create something out of wool (usually garments) and then will be judged on craftsmanship, utilization of wool and overall product.

Skateboarding Scholarship Competition

The Patrick Kerr Skateboarding Competition offers up to a $5,000 scholarship for one grand prize winner as well as skateboarding gear for second and third place winners. If you like to skateboard and have skills this could be the chance of the lifetime. The scholarship is for 2 or 4 year college applicants and requires you to write an essay on how skateboarding has positively affected your life.

Scholarships For Moms

As a mom you might think that it’s impossible for you to go back to school. You have the responsibilities of a full working adult and you have kids to take care of. The money you make is probably always spent on your children. These factors can all make it very difficult for you to go back to school and earn your degree. In fact, thirty years ago, you probably wouldn’t have been able to go back to school unless you took out a mortgage and hired a child care expert.

Today, there are a lot more options. The first is that you can attend an online school and study straight from your home. This makes studying a lot easier because you can take care of your kids while you study.

The second, there are a lot of scholarships available just for moms! Scholarships for moms are designed to allow moms to go back to school. Moms who study and earn their degree can return to the work force with a higher pay grade which not only boosts your income but the economy as well.

Mother’s Day Scholarship

The Straigherline website features a variety of scholarships for mothers including a $999 essay scholarship. To apply, you must submit a 200 word essay about why your schooling is important for your family. The website also hosts scholarships that offer free enrollment and even one free course. Enrollment deadline is June 1’st.

Scholarships for Single Mothers

If you are a single mother you have more chances of getting a scholarship than any other minority student. There are literally hundreds of scholarships for single mothers including the Arkansas Single Parent fund which is need based. The Jeanette Rankin Scholarship Foundation which offers scholarships to women 35 and older. The Mink Education Foundation is also offering up to $2,000 to mothers with children who are pursuing higher education. There are five of these scholarships for mothers awarded each year.

Federal Scholarships for Moms

There are also Federal Scholarships for Moms. While not all federal scholarships are aimed specifically at mothers, they are need based. As a mother you will have a very good chance of qualifying for the top amounts awarded by many federal scholarships. For example, for 2012, you can earn around $5,200 from only the Pell Grant. You can also add to this grant with other federal scholarships and you might even qualify for a stimulus grant which is designed to help needy students go through college in order to stimulate the economy. To apply to any Federal grant, you should fill out an FAFSA form.

How You Can Go To College

As popularized by the board game of Life, many people believe that after graduating high school they have two choices; College or a Job. After that you get a car, a house, marriage, kids in pink or blue and possibly a minivan. That is it; the choices you made when you are a teenager will rule your life forever.

Most people believe this because once you have the responsibilities of a parent or working adult, you simply cannot afford the time it would take to go back to school. But guess what, you don’t have to quit your job, abandon your family or otherwise give up on the life that you have worked hard to earn, you just have to find alternate study options.

Night School

Night School has long been a popular option for working people who want to advance their career. Usually night school will take about twice as long to complete a course so if you are in a hurry, this is not the option for you. Night School requires that you show up to a college to attend a few hours of college and then return home to study in your own time. This type of tuition will earn you your degree but will take away from your free time (and your sleep).

Weekend School

Another popular option, attending weekend school has a lot of benefits. You can attend school on your weekends when you are free from work. However; this option is not well suited to a parent who should spend weekends with kids. Weekend school will also take a great deal longer than a traditional school to earn a degree.

Online Tuition

Online tuition is the most rapidly advancing form of learning on the planet. Distance learning is a tuition method that allows students to study a program from anywhere and at any time.

Because of this; online learning is also the most effective method of studying while you work. You can arrange your study around your schedule so that you can go to work, come home, spend time with your kids, study before bed and then go to sleep. It doesn’t matter when or where you study because as long as you submit the work on time, online tuition allows you complete freedom.

Online tuition is also a very good option because it is sometimes cheaper than other forms of tuition and can be taken in accelerated or slowed down study courses (so you can learn more quickly or more slowly).  Online tuition also covers a very wide range of study options including most of the courses available at a traditional college.

If you are interested in studying a specific program, chances are you can study it online. If you began study in the past but quit due to money or family issues, you can also probably use the credits you earned towards your new study!

So, ignore the game of life and feel free to cut corners, do whatever you want and even make new rules if necessary. Life is not a board game, you can go back to school if you want!

How Online Learning Works

Online learning; you’ve heard about it and might even have heard it’s a good study option. But with the expense of studying online you want to know how it works before dedicating your time and money.

E-learning works through three major methods of teaching and learning. These include tutorials, courses and assignments.

Tutorials

Tutorials are the most basic method of teaching simple lessons or guidelines on how to study. A tutorial is used to demonstrate what can be done with electronics (for example if you are studying for a forensic psychology degree online than you can take a tutorial on how to examine a DNA molecule.)  Tutorials are used to teach you the basics of a course without requiring a teacher to be present. For example, you can take a tutorial at any time of the day or night, even if your teacher and classmates are sleeping. This gives you a lot more freedom of study without sacrificing anything from your study. If you aren’t sure about something in the tutorial, you can always send an email to your teacher to be answered whenever they get to the computer.

Courses

Traditional college courses are another major part of online learning. All online schools use study courses. A course is a study period where you will work with teacher assigned information to read and process information. Courses can also include audio or video lectures provided to you by the teacher, reading material or even sitting down and engaging in a one-to-one or one-to-many chat with your teacher or fellow classmates. You can learn in these chat sessions or simply discuss what you will be doing with your lessons. Group sessions can include college study, chat, given assignments and more.

Assignments

Assignments are perhaps the most important part of e-learning because they include the actual study and reading of material as well as the application of learned material. Assignments can include doing research and writing a paper (This is the most common), conducting a study with a group of classmates (also common) and depending on what you are studying, can also include translating text, drawing, designing or writing up code for a computer program. In general, assignments will ask you to use information that you have learned in order to continue your learning and gain real world experience.

Online learning allows you to study from a computer rather than from a classroom. This gives you the freedom to study from anywhere and at any time you choose. Most online students work while they study or even stay at home as full time parents.

Moms: Your Career Is In Your Hands

You graduated high school with the intent of studying at college. Perhaps you even started studying but ended up having to stop. Maybe it was because you wanted to wait and maybe because family seemed more important.  Now, you have kids, a job and responsibilities that you just can’t give up so that you can go to college. But you still want to and you know that if you don’t attend college now. You probably never will.

Online college is the perfect opportunity for you. Even if you cannot leave your home, or quit your job or give up time with your children you can still attend college.

Flexible Schedule

Online schools have a more flexible schedule than traditional colleges. For example; at a traditional college you are required to show up to class on time and to stay for the duration of that class. If you have to leave for any reason you could miss important information. With online study, you can study at your own leisure which means you can study between making your kids lunch and taking them to soccer. You can also study at night after you get home from work and your kids are asleep. The only thing you lose is time for sleep and relaxation (Which is what coffee is for).

Study More Slowly

Most online schools also have study programs that allow you to study more slowly. This means you can take up twice as long to study for a degree (meaning you have more time for things like sleep). If you are a busy mom, a slower study schedule can be a blessing.  The only downside of studying more slowly is that it can take twice as long before you finish college.

Use Previously Earned Credits

If you’ve attending an accredited college in the past then you can probably transfer your old credits towards your new course, even if you never completed the course. Just remember to ask your old college for transcripts and to make sure that they are still accredited. Some colleges will not accept transfers but most of them accept up to 75% of the credits towards a course. This can save you a lot of time and money if you still remember what you were studying!

Study Anywhere

This is almost the best part about studying at an online college. You can literally study from anywhere. That includes during your lunch break at work, in bed, while lying on the couch pretending to watch TV with your kids or numerous other possibilities.  Most of the time you will work with e-text books with are cheaper and more portable. This means you can take a tablet, laptop or e-reader and read your lessons pretty much anywhere. Including in public transport!

How An Associate Degree Can Help Your Career

An associate degree is a 2 year degree that in most cases, will earn approximately half of the credits you would earn studying for a bachelor degree. The associate degree also allows you to study about the first half of the material studied in a bachelor degree and in most cases, the credits earned during you associate degree can then be used towards your bachelor.

Earn Your Degree Faster

What are the benefits? You can get a degree in two years and then study for your bachelor degree.  Best of all, because you have already earned the points in your associate degree, you can usually use them towards your bachelor degree. This means you can earn your bachelor in only two years. However; you should always remember to get your associate degree at an accredited school, otherwise, your credits will not be transferable and you cannot use them towards your bachelor.

Get a Job & Keep Studying

Studying art and design? Want to study for writing? You’re associate degree can help you get a job and then allow you to keep studying. This is especially true if you want to study at an online college course. Online study allows you to have more free time because you can study whenever you want to instead of having to show up to class on time. This makes online study perfect for fitting study around your new job!

Your Foot in the Door

If you want to get your foot in the door than an Associate degree is for you. You can use your associate degree to get an entry level job. That’s your foot in the door! Entry level jobs will usually take 1-2 years before promotion. This means that earning your associate degree will allow you to get an entry level job and work at it while you earn your bachelor degree.

Expedite Your Career

Most of all, an associate degree can help you to expedite your career. After only two years of studying you can get your foot in the door at an entry level job. This will help you to gain work experience so that you can find a better paying job after you earn your bachelor. If you do not do this, you will spend four years studying and then an additional two years working at an entry level job. Earning your associate degree first can speed up your career by at least two years!!

Why Your Computer Science Degree Is Important

If you’re thinking about studying for your computer science degree than you probably want to know why. After all, you might have already have all of the skills required to do a job in the computer science industry or in fact, you might even be working at an entry level job! But, the fact of the matter is, unless you want to spend the rest of your career being an administrative assistant, you should probably have a degree.

Open Doors

Your computer science degree can and will open doors to new possibilities and new jobs. For example, while studying at college (even if you study online) you will meet new people. Chances are,, these people will be studying the same things you are and will be future work connections that you can use to get a job, get help with a tough project or just have likeminded friends.  Another example is that if you are studying at college, you can take an internship which will help you to gain on the job experience, work with colleagues and to meet potential future employers.

Learn Professionalism

This is something that is almost impossible to learn on your own, how to be a professional. Sure you already know to be polite and to keep your working area mostly free of coffee stains and half eaten snickers bars but do you know how to properly apply code in 5 different programs? Do you know how to manage a system with the proper coding and according to regulations and guidelines? Your computer science degree will teach you all of this and more!

Hone Your Craft

Your Computer Science degree will help you to learn the ins and outs of your job. It will help you to learn to work with different computers, to quickly and easily troubleshoot a computer or system and most of all, to learn your chosen career to the best of your ability.  This means learning to master your skills (or build them) so that you can do pretty much anything you would like to do.

Increase Your Capacity for Learning

Getting a degree not only gets you a fancy piece of paper and a lot of knowledge you might or might not already know, but it also teaches you to learn. A degree teaches you to organize your knowledge, information and how to research in order to learn more easily on your own. And believe it or not, learning to learn is a great skill all on its own.

Get the Job

What is the best part about getting your computer science degree? It tells potential employers that you have the skills you are looking for, that you have received professional training and have the ability to work in a professional environment. While you don’t need a degree to get a job in computer science, it helps a great deal to have one!

As a teacher you will learn to teach children, teenagers or adults the life lessons and information that they require to get through life and to get a job. Teachers can teach at different levels such as kindergarten, middle school, high school, college, and different courses such as math, English, medicine, or special education.

Teacher Salary

Despite all of the information about teachers receiving relatively low salaries (for example: a 2006 study reported that many teachers leave their jobs within 5 years because of low pay) the average teacher salary in 2011-2012 is $46,000 per year! Considering that you will not be working in the summer months unless you specifically work for a daycare or summer school; that is a rather good salary.

Teacher Job Description

A teacher can expect to arrange and organize lesson material, prepare and give tests, manage a classroom with five to forty five children and depending upon what grade level they are teaching, be prepared to work with children of different ages.

No matter where a teacher works they must enjoy working with children, must be patient, willing to accept and correct mistakes and have the ability to transfer spoken lessons so that they will be understood by the appropriate age group. Undergraduate Degrees

An undergraduate degree is a term that you will often hear and it can be confusing at first. What is an undergraduate degree? It’s pretty simple actually. An undergraduate degree is just a students’ first degree, every student must have one and if they only get one degree than they only have one undergraduate degree. In most cases, you will require one or more undergraduate degrees in order to study for a graduate degree!

Certificate – A certificate is an undergraduate degree that does not allow you to study for a higher degree. This type of degree teaches the student one module or one part of what should be in full degree course. Generally certificate courses last anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months and are most often taken in order to fulfil a job requirement.

Associate – An Associate degree is one step up from a Certificate and in most cases will take 2 years to complete. Associate degrees can be used to get entry level jobs in a field and in most cases; the credits you earn from your Associate degree can be used to earn your Bachelor degree.

Bachelor- A bachelor degree is a classic 4 year degree that can be used to earn most jobs. With a bachelor degree you can expect to start out in entry level jobs but be able to quickly work your way up to just under the highest paying jobs available. A Bachelor degree can be used to study for your graduate degree.

Graduate Degree

A Graduate degree or secondary degree is the highest degree that you can earn. This degree will qualify you to hold the highest paying jobs available and will in most cases require a minimum of 2-3 years of study after earning your 4 year degree.

Master A master degree is generally the highest that any given individual will go in their field. Most career choices will only have Master degree options. This study usually requires a minimum of 2 years of study after earning your Bachelor degree but will generally considerably raise your salary. In most cases a Master degree will allow you to either move up in your current job or to have a different but very similar job with higher pay.

PHD – Doctoral Degree – A PDH or Doctoral degree isn’t just for doctors and medical students. These degrees generally require that you have a Master degree and are the highest level in any form of education. PHD degrees generally run 2-3 years after a Master degree which will increase your study time to a total of 8 to 9 years. PHD degrees are most commonly given in psychology where they are used by Dr’s and psychiatrists to better evaluate and help patients as well as to earn more money.

How Information & Learning Technology Affects You

It doesn’t matter whether you study at an on campus college or one of the best online schools, as a student, information and learning technology affects you, you’re study and your future career.  If you aren’t sure what information and learning technology is, it is the process of all technology and ideas that are applied to study, research and the processing of information. If you have asked yourself, how does information and learning technology apply to me, than here are your answers.

ILT Affects Your Study

Information and Learning Technology affects your study because it dictates how and what you are taught.  This means that ILT affects not only what you are studying, the information you are learning but how it is given to you as well. Information and Learning Technology uses everything from lectures, media, textbooks and assignments to student-teacher interaction, dialogue and difficulty of assignments to help teach students what they have paid to learn.

ILT Affects Your Career

Information and Learning Technology affects your career because 1. It affects how you are taught, 2. It affects how well you absorb information and 3. It affects the basic principles by which you have been taught to apply information to action. This means that Information and learning technology affects how you work and in some cases why you work. For example, one aspect of information and learning technology is to teach a student a work ethic or code that will help them to complete their studies. This ethic is then applied to an actual job and can help to further, or disadvantage, your career.

How ILT Is Changing

Like all technology, Information and Learning Technology is a constantly changing or even evolving mass of ideas and information. This means that everything you are currently familiar with in terms of study, study material and information application could be completely different in a year, two months; a week, tomorrow and that change might be different a week or two down the road.  Information and Learning Technology changes as new information is added, new methods are developed and as old systems fall out of use or are used again. This means that most learning systems are constantly updating in order to keep up with times and changes.
